5 Simple Ways to Spiritualize Your Living Space
How to harmonize and create positive energy in your surroundings
I have written a lot about the movement of energy, and how we should begin to take our surroundings are ourselves. A person is a reflection of their environment. If you walk into a room of a female teenager, it is easy to tell their personality by simply analyzing its contents and the placement of items.
I remember before I learned about Feng shui, I was invited into a millionaire house to find out that she had collected a wealth of Feng shui books. Later on, I realized she was applying its principle to place herself on the river of wealth.
Feng Shui is an ancient art of placement that has been practiced for thousands of years. They believe that the positions of a building, location, structure, contents, and the placements of interior objects can affect the flow of energy and eventually the well-being of the person living inside it.
Vastu Shastra is another Vedic art of placement. I personally feel that Vastu shastra goes deeper than Feng Shui. Because of its simplicity feng shui has been adopted worldwide than Vastu shastra.
In this article, however, I am not going to discuss feng shui or Vastu shastra principles but will give you insights and tips on how you can create an environment suitable for yourself and for a specific task.
Consider the following:
- How does a dark room vs a bright and colorful room affect your moods
- How does a chaotic, busy and noisy environment affect your ability to stay focused?
- How does a dirty, cluttered, and confined space affect your degree of being active?
- The sales between the main floor clothing store in the mall and the clothing store on the third floor at the end of the mall.
It is obvious that the conditions of our surroundings affect our physical and spiritual conditions. And that if we analyze our environment, they reflect on our wellness and energy levels. If you walk into your friends’ room to find out that it is cluttered and unorganized this will immediately give you a certain impression about your friend.
So, the first and foremost thing to deal with is a person, though our environment affects us greatly. However, our environment is also a product of our past emotions and moods where if we don’t attend to these energies, they will keep us stuck in the same moods as long as we don’t clean our living space.
The good reason you want to cure your surroundings and environment, in general, is because of harmony. So, I have categorized it into five things that you can do to improve the flow of energy and be in harmony with your surroundings.
I have basically used the principle of the five elements to determine and target specific areas that one needs to improve.
The rule of the thumb is,
- The purpose of the space, for example if it is an office, you need to create a working environment.
- The movement of energies, what kind of energies do you want to maximize in that specific room? do you want to have creativity? do you want to stay focused and productive? and so on.
- The space and supportive conditions for a specific task, you need to create a space that will support what that space is used for. Though we are already doing this subconsciously, it doesn’t hurt to understand the principles. Maybe you are working on writing your novel, but every time you start to write a paragraph, you become distracted, you feel unmotivated, in the end, time passes without any accomplishment.
- The types of items to use in your surrounding based on the purpose of your room.
- And the power or strength of that room. What these means is that there are the natural energies that flow in that specific location. The example of two clothing stores is that the store on the main floor will sell more simply because it is convenient for people to walk in the main floor store first before they look for another one. For this reason, the natural location of that store gives it advantage over the other.
Another principle is the house should be treated as an entity in a metaphysical sense. For example, the main door of your house does not only allow people to walk get into the house throughout it, but it also brings a lot of other things such as furniture, appliances etc. not only that but also spiritual energies comes through the main door, Which brings us back to the example of two stores, where the location and the direction it faces makes a significant impact on the development of your living space and yourself as well.
To understand this further, there are also five major components of a house which are:
- The walls of the house, the walls represent stability, containment, and boundary.
- The roof over the house, this represents protection and nurturing.
- The windows on the house represents an opportunity, direction, knowingness and vision.
- The door on a house represents, connection, path, invitation and beginning.
- The floor of the house represents foundation, grounding, and foothold.
- Space in the room it represents space both physical and metaphysical
Then there are four directions based on the five elements, I am using African geomancy here because I am aware of minor differences and interpretations on different cultures. However, the key is the meaning behind them. We interpret or read these four directions by facing the sun, then your front/East is where the sun rises and back/West is where the sun sets, right hand is South and left hand is North. So, the directions are as follows:
Sun rise — East — element of sky/light/fire — Supports intellects, spirituality, awakening, knowledge and wisdom
Sun set — West — element water/vibration/movement — Supports transportation, activities, flow
Left hand — North — element metal/rock/mountain
right hand — South — element earth
Center — Space
