An Eerie Feelings I Got About Medium
What’s the Alternative to Medium Platform?
It has been over three weeks since I started publishing constantly on Medium. There are things that I enjoy about medium and there are things that give me an eerie feeling, and that these things can’t be ignored, I think everyone should know about.
What I like about Medium
So far Medium has a lot of good communities and content. Here are things I like about Medium
- I like the fact that I can publish anything ‘freely’. I enjoy the simplicity of the platform itself, which anyone with average computer skills can publish easily.
- Medium has a lot of good communities and publications in general, which means whatever niche you focus on, there are readers.
- The fact that you get paid to do what you enjoy.
And I am sure there are other features that I haven’t mentioned here, but let’s move forward to what really keeps me looking over my shoulder about Medium.
What gives me an Eerie feeling about Medium
- So here is the thing, I believe we can all agreed that as a writer when you put a lot of hard work into your pieces, you deserve a good reward, a lot of writers sign up on Medium because of exposure, they want the World to read their content.
- But little did I know that this is not the case, you have to be curated for your content to be exposed, otherwise, you are out of luck. What bugs me is who curates the curator? and sometimes I have specific topics that I choose their tags to read, but it keeps on suggesting/recommending different topics that I have no intention of reading.
- Medium doesn’t care about the number of visitors you bring outside of the platform or referrals, I mean if I share my content on social media, then someone decides to join and subscribe because of my hard work, shouldn’t I get credited for that? Shouldn’t you get credited?
- I published one of my articles a while ago, which brought a lot of traffic from google, bing, yahoo, and duckduckgo, but it doesn’t generate any income at all because the readers are not medium subscribers. I know other sites like vocal.media pays for this, I tried it, but it is just not as friendly, takes decades to publish your articles, and once you publish you can’t edit unless you send a request.
- Here is what really makes me think twice about Medium. I saw one of Diana C. articles about her account and publication suspension. This made me nervous, what did she do? of course, she got her account back, but it makes you wonder, if that could happen to an average person like her, who doesn’t publish anything out of this world, would it not happen to you too? After reading her review, I went ahead and learn how to download my medium content & information.
- Problem with plagiarizing, When we post our hard work here on Medium, I am not sure how it is protected, I have noticed a lot of writers have to add a Copywrite by so and so at the end of their posts, so I searched and find out that your work is not protected. I wanted to publish my book here, but I hesitated after reading this: Does copyright law apply to articles published on Medium?.
- The last thing is the payments system, I haven’t had any problems with getting payments from medium so far, but I saw one of the writers on one of the Facebook groups asking about his stripe account being frozen, the fact that stripe only works on these countries and if you are out of the zone, you don’t have any other ways to get paid by medium unless you find a way around it and seriously just don’t try to beat the system. It is not just one person, there are plenty of people especially from non-English speaking countries, that got burned after months of hard work.

Conclusion:
Well, you know what they say;
if you see your neighbor being robbed, go but a gun.
It is better to be prepared than being sorry, considering all the censoring and demonetization going around on social media.
I have been looking around to see if there are any alternatives to medium, Originally I wanted to publish my content on medium so that it can stay online as long as humanity itself, without the need to pay for hosting a website, I wanted something trustworthy that can host my content.
Though Medium is not the worst and I think it still has room for improvements. For me, I’d rather know which ground I am going to fall on when Medium becomes hostile.
