What Does Spirituality Mean to You?
Spirituality is beyond good and evil.
What does it mean to be spiritual?
There are many types of spiritual people. We cannot really judge who is a truly spiritual person, because every and each one of us has a different path in our lives. But we can’t help but notice there are people who are somehow different than others or at least they know a thing or two that others don’t.
For example, you may find that other people have a higher loving and caring character compared to others. While others may have the opposite of that, or you may find that other people are less concerned with world affairs than others. Some like to label themselves, others stay off the radar, while others just pretend to be what they are not.
So I have come up with characteristics that you can measure yourself and see where you stand.
What is spirit anyway?
As we grow we tend to borrow words from our elders and use them as they are. However, very few people try to contemplate the essence of their meanings. You can ask a lot of people what is a spirit but they can vaguely explain what it is.
Spirit by definition is the non-physical part of a human being. People often try to associate spirit with emotions and the mind, but in my opinion, the spirit is separate from the mind and emotions.
A spirit is that thing that keeps us moving forward, it is our willpower. Willpower is independent of physical limitations or circumstances.
This is to say, an individual can have one spirit with many branches, for example, a spirit of courage, endurance, etc. The type of fire within us that makes an individual be persistent can be considered a spirit.
So then what is the difference between Spirit and a Soul?
The soul is what a person has accomplished in many lives; it is their immortal nature. When someone dies or passes away, as they say, it is their soul that carries on. This is what actually makes up the individual, it is the seed of life, what comes from the mother’s womb.
What does it mean to be spiritual?
Basically, when an individual lives spiritually he/she has renounced the World, this is to say they have put their spiritual nature as their primary criteria to live by, for example,
Will this person harm another soul to gain more money?
Will they hurt other people’s feelings to gain popularity?
Obviously, if someone is spiritual, they wouldn’t do such a thing. In other cases, however, because spirituality involves being guided by higher guidance instead of following our physical needs. It could be difficult to determine what is right or wrong based on what we know or what we have experienced. This is because we are constantly changing and elevating our understanding.
For example, if you have a child that is behaving badly when you punish or correct them you may hurt their feelings. It doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t spiritual because even though you hurt others’ feelings you still did what you thought was ‘right’.
Another way to look at this is life itself. There are many problems in life, like diseases, famine, death, and many other types of suffering. Does this make our Universe evil? Not necessarily, as we examine and contemplate these situations we discover that they are both meaningful and purposeful.
We discover that natural disasters are not just natural after all, but results of what our society has done to the environment and remained unnoticed. This turns out to be the slap of love. Diseases are another relevant example. We discover that we need to pay attention to our health and well-being.
Initiating your spiritual nature requires constantly letting go of attachments, connecting with your “original rhythms”, higher-self, and living in the moment.
What’s an attachment?
Lust, anger, personal interests, greed, selfishness, wants, negative emotions An attachment is that which prevents you from experiencing the present moment.
How can you validate your ways of understanding something?
How do you know what you believe is true? Or how do you know what you understand is valid?
You will know or validate your knowledge or insights through experience because, when you apply it will either work or not.
Following the flow of nature is like following the flow of the river, the flow of energies. Being able to allow information through instincts and having an open mind that will let insights flow through you from the source and original higher self to this world. This implies that at any moment you don’t do things based on “your own judgment” or the knowledge and wisdom you have acquired over time, but by evaluating and doing things for “what they are at that particular moment”
Reaching enlightenment and returning to your original nature
Enlightenment can mean a lot of things, however, all paths to enlightenment lead to the same goal. Enlightenment by definition refers to being able to experience life and the Universe in its true nature. This means seeing the Universe for what it is. And this is the goal of a spiritual person.
What about GOD?
I was watching one documentary that talks about the religion of Buddhism as the religion that doesn’t have God. Though this might seem absurd the meaning behind it is that for a spiritual person God can mean a lot of things to different people.
This is a good example; assume you were given 100 acres of land, to do whatever you want to do with it. The land is a potential that this potentiality depends on you. The more knowledge you have on how to cultivate the land, the more you can cultivate and do a lot with it. Then if God was a land, it becomes apparent that the problem is not God, but the problem is you, the more you improve yourself the more you will understand what God is, so it doesn’t matter much about God, but yourself. If I give a million dollars to a chicken, what will it do? until a chicken realized what it has been given, then it will make sense.
That’s why it becomes a trap for people falling into cults and religion, they fail to see the potentiality of God to cultivate it.
